From facts to long multiplication
Short multiplication (a number times one digit) depends on knowing the times tables by heart and carrying correctly. Long multiplication adds one more line of working for each digit of the bottom number, then a final addition.
On column sheets with a two- or three-digit multiplier, empty rows are left between the two lines so there is space for each partial product. The answer key shows the final product.
Tables first
If a child hesitates on 7 × 8 inside a long multiplication, the whole sum slows down. A few minutes a day on the times tables sheets makes the bigger problems much easier.
Questions from parents and teachers
What is the difference between short and long multiplication?
Short multiplication multiplies by a single digit in one line. Long multiplication multiplies by each digit of a two- or three-digit number on separate lines and adds them.
Are the partial products in the answer key?
The key gives the final product so the sheet can be marked quickly. The working rows on the sheet are left blank for the child.
Do the problems include × 0 and × 1?
Only rarely. They are too easy to be useful practice beyond the first tables.
