Simplest form and mixed numbers

Every answer in the key is fully simplified: 6/8 becomes 3/4. When an answer is bigger than one it is written as a mixed number, so 7/5 appears as 1 2/5; a whole-number answer such as 4/4 appears as 1.

Unlike denominators

To add 2/3 and 1/4, both fractions are first rewritten over a common denominator (here 12): 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12. Keep the largest denominator at 6 or 10 at first so the common denominators stay small.

Comparing sheets include some equal pairs, like 2/3 and 4/6, so the = sign is a real option and not a trick.

Questions from parents and teachers

Do subtraction answers ever go below zero?

No. The larger fraction always comes first.

What does Largest denominator change?

It caps the bottom numbers that appear in the problems. Smaller values give easier common denominators.

How do I compare two fractions quickly?

Cross-multiply: for 3/5 and 2/3, compare 3 × 3 = 9 with 2 × 5 = 10. Since 9 < 10, 3/5 < 2/3.
