Exact answers or remainders
With No remainders every problem divides exactly, which is the best start: children can check each answer by multiplying back. With remainders every problem leaves something over, written as R, for example 47 ÷ 5 = 9 R 2.
Long division layout
The long division layout puts the divisor outside the bracket and the number being divided under the bar, with space below for each subtract-and-bring-down step. The quotient is written on top, one digit per square, above the matching digit of the dividend.
Questions from parents and teachers
How do I check a division answer?
Multiply the answer by the divisor and add the remainder. The result should be the number you started with.
Why does the remainder have to be smaller than the divisor?
If it were equal or larger, the divisor would fit in at least once more, so the answer would be one bigger.
Which level should come first?
Division facts (÷ 2 to 9) with no remainders, then a one-digit divisor with a two-digit answer.
